2nd Intra-Departmental Moot Court Competition
On 7th May 2025, the University Institute of Law (UIL) hosted the prestigious 2nd Intra-Departmental Moot Court Competition, a landmark event that brought together students from all semesters of the BA.LL.B. program in a spirited display of legal intellect, advocacy, and teamwork. The competition, an initiative rooted in UIL’s commitment to practical legal education, aimed to simulate the real-life court environment and offer students a unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a professional and competitive setting. The day began with an inspiring inaugural address by Dr. Pooja Bali, the esteemed Dean of UIL, who passionately underscored the transformative role of moot courts in a law student’s journey. Dr. Bali remarked that moot court exercises are not merely academic requirements but are foundational experiences that mold a student’s legal thinking, refine their advocacy techniques, and instill essential courtroom etiquette. She further emphasized that such platforms are instrumental in sharpening students’ research abilities, developing confidence in public speaking, and encouraging them to engage with complex legal issues from multiple perspectives—all of which are essential qualities for any aspiring legal professional. The competition witnessed the enthusiastic participation of eight teams, comprising students from various academic years, thereby creating a dynamic and inclusive environment that encouraged peer learning and mentorship. The event was meticulously structured into two rounds—a preliminary round and a final round—and was held across four separate courtrooms, each designed to replicate the atmosphere and procedural formalities of an actual courtroom. During the preliminary rounds, each team presented their written memorials and delivered oral arguments before panels of judges, who assessed the participants on multiple criteria including legal reasoning, court decorum, articulation of arguments, and the ability to respond effectively to judicial questioning. The standard of competition was exceptionally high, with all teams demonstrating in-depth preparation, logical coherence, and professional demeanor. Following this round, the top four teams with the highest scores qualified for the final round, where the level of competition reached its peak. In the climactic final round, participants showcased refined advocacy and deep legal insight as they engaged in rigorous argumentation on a complex legal proposition. After careful deliberation and evaluation by the judges, Team Code F was declared the overall winner of the competition. The team, comprising Vipul, Deepak, and Parween, impressed the judging panel with their clarity of thought, cohesive teamwork, and persuasive delivery, ultimately earning them the First Position. Individual excellence was also recognized: Vipul was honored with the title of Best Mooter for his exceptional oratory skills, courtroom presence, and compelling legal arguments; while Simarjit Kaur was awarded the Best Researcher for her outstanding contribution to the preparation of memorials, depth of legal analysis, and innovative use of precedents. The success of the event was made possible through the dedicated efforts and seamless coordination of Mr. Girija Nand and Mr. Rishav Dogra, both Assistant Professors at UIL, who oversaw every aspect of the competition—from planning and scheduling to courtroom arrangements and judge coordination. Their commitment to academic excellence and experiential learning was evident in the smooth execution and high standard of the event. The 2nd Intra-Departmental Moot Court Competition proved to be not only an intellectually enriching experience for the participants but also a powerful demonstration of UIL’s dedication to nurturing future-ready legal professionals. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and courtroom practice, the competition reaffirmed the institute’s mission to develop articulate, confident, and ethically grounded advocates equipped to serve the legal system with competence and integrity.
