Farmers-Scientists Interaction Meet on Rabi Season Crops

An extension awareness programme on “Rabi Season Crops and Modern Agricultural Technologies” was successfully organized by Dr.Shalu Vyas and Dr. Vikrant Jaryan from the Department of Agriculture, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, under the Viksit Bharat KrishiSankalpAbhiyan at Village Ajram, District Hoshiarpur. The event aimed to empower farmers with scientific knowledge and practical insights on Rabi crop management, farm diversification, and modern horticultural practices.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr.Shalu Vyas, Dean UIA, Associate Professor (Horticulture)**, who emphasized the importance of adopting modern and sustainable agricultural technologies to enhance productivity and income. Expert lectures were delivered by eminent faculty members from the university.
Dr. Satish Kumar, Professor of Agronomy, discussed improved production technologies for major Rabi crops such as wheat, mustard, chickpea, and barley, focusing on soil health, nutrient balance, and precision irrigation. Dr. K. S. Bangarwa, Professor of Forestry, highlighted the role of Poplar and Eucalyptus in agroforestry-based income generation and sustainable land use. Dr. R. K. Patel, Professor of Agricultural Economics, guided farmers on farm management, financial planning, and cost–benefit analysis to maximize profits. Dr. Vikrant Jaryan, Associate Professor of Botany, encouraged crop diversification and inspired Punjab’s youth to take interest in agriculture through innovative ventures such as protected cultivation and agri-startups. Dr.Shalu Vyas of Fruit Science elaborated on modern horticultural practices including high-density planting, canopy management, use of biofertilizers, micro-irrigation, and protected cultivation to enhance income from fruit and vegetable crops.
A farmers’ interaction session was also conducted, where participants shared their experiences and queries regarding pest management, soil fertility, and market linkages. Experts provided practical and scientific solutions. As part of the programme, improved variety mustard seeds were distributed to farmers to encourage adoption of high-yielding varieties and promote self-reliance in seed use. Farmers expressed great happiness and gratitude for this initiative, appreciating the university’s continuous efforts to support rural communities with tangible benefits and modern agricultural knowledge.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a collective commitment to continue such capacity-building programmes in rural areas. The programme was highly successful in bridging the gap between research and field application, fostering stronger linkages between Sant Baba Bhag Singh University and the farming community, and inspiring farmers toward sustainable, diversified, and technology-driven agriculture.
