ESM Cell-mediated Plantation Drive undertaken by the Department of Physical Education & Sports at Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden

To promote environmental awareness, conservation and sustainability, a plantation drive, especially of medicinal plants, was undertaken by the teaching staff members of the Department of Physical Education & Sports at Sant Baba Bhag Singh University organized by the Environment Sustainability Management (ESM) Cell under the aegis of IQAC on 17th November 2023 (Friday) in Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden with the blessings of the Reverend Chancellor and under the guidance of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Dharmjit Singh Parmar.
The students of B. Sc. Medical semester III, M. Sc. Botany semester III, M. Sc. Ag. Horticulture (Fruit Science) semester III, and M. Sc. Ag. Soil Science & Agriculture Chemistry semester III planted the saplings of Harad, Bahera, and Neem. The plants of Harad have been planted and adopted by Dr. R. S. Pathania (Director, Sports), Dr. K. P. S. Mahi (Associate Professor), Dr. Surinder Kaur Mahi (Associate Professor), Dr. Amarjit Singh (Assistant Professor), Mr. Prabhjot Singh (Assistant Professor), Mr. Sharanpreet Singh (Assistant Professor), Mr. Ajaiz Bashir (Assistant Professor), and Mr. Ajay Singh (Football Coach) from the Department of Physical Education & Sports of the University. Dr. Pathania expressed his enthusiasm about the plantation drive, stating, “Integration of environmental care and sustainability with Sports & Physical Education can be a best environmental practice.” He also said that all the faculty members are very keen as well as delighted to be a part of this green mission to generate consciousness about the plants. Dr. Mahi said that as part of this plantation drive, the students can also undertake assignments to address environmental issues. Dr. Amarjit and Mr. Prabhjot mentioned that they will also inspire their students to embrace sustainable development practices. Mr. Bashir and Mr. Ajay pledged to be a part of all future hands-on plantation drives to combat climate change. Being a local farmer and due to his passion for tree plantation, Mr. Sharanpreet shared his experiences and effective methods for the better survival of the planted saplings.
Dr. Indu Sharma said that the series of plantation drives at the University campus is possible due to the continuous efforts, unwavering determination and dedication of members of ESM cell towards environmental awareness and sustainable development. This post-Diwali plantation drive was planned and successfully executed by Ms. Amrit (UICAIS) and Ms. Harjit Kaur (UICAIS), ESM Cell of the University. All saplings were planted in the Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden with the help of Mr. Jeeta.
