Plantation of Harar and Amaltas in Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden

The first two saplings of Harar (Harad or Terminalia chebula) have been planted at Sant Baba Bhag Singh University with the blessings of Reverend Chancellor and under guidance of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Dharmjit Singh Parmar by the Environment Sustainability Management (ESM) Cell under the aegis of IQAC on November 9th, 2023 (Thursday) in Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden.
Dr. Indu Sharma told that being immense medicinal importance, the Harad saplings have been planted the Botanical Garden of the University. Also, known as Myrobalan, Harad is referred as the “King of Medicines. It is a crucial and miraculous ayurvedic plant used in an array of traditional remedies. Its dried fruit is one of the three musketeers that constitute the potent rejuvenative ‘Triphala’ formulation. Also, it has various medicinal properties like laxative, astringent, purgative, anti-bilious and anti-oxidant, which are employed for treating numerous health anomalies. Besides this, three saplings of another medicinally significant plant, Amaltas (Cassia fistula) were planted by the students of B. Sc. Medical semester III, M. Sc. Ag. Horticulture (Fruit Science) semester III and M. Sc. Ag. Agronomy semester III.
The plants of Harar have been planted and adopted by Mr. Rajwinder Singh Dhami. Further, the plants of Amaltas are adopted by Mr. Sukhwinder Singh and Mr. Yadwinder Singh. Mr. Sukhwinder Singh said that by adopting these plants, they will also remain in touch with the nature. Mr. Rajwinder Singh Dhami mentioned that plantation drive might be a better way to celebrate green and safe Diwali. This pre-Diwali plantation drive was planned and successfully executed by Ms. Harjit Kaur (UICAIS), ESM Cell of the University. All saplings were planted in the Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden with the help of Mr. Jeeta.
