The first two saplings of Red Indian Sandalwood (Chandan) have been planted at Sant Baba Bhag Singh University with the blessings of Reverend Chancellor and under guidance of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Dharmjit Singh Parmar by the Environment Sustainability Management (ESM) Cell under the aegis of IQAC on 7th November, 2023 (Tuesday) in Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden.
Dr. Vikrant Jaryan told the students about flora of Botanical Garden. He also discussed various plantation methods and basic cultivation techniques for different plants. While explaining the significance of Chandan, Dr. Jaryan said that Sandalwood is a royal tree and it has been revered for its medicinal and aromatic properties since ages.
Thereafter, Dr. Anil K Singh elaborated the pharmaceutical importance of Bahera (Beleric), Arjuna and Neem. He said that medicinal or herbal plants possesss important phytochemicals which are naturally active compounds with medicinal potential, and therefore, these plants are used to cure human diseases.
Dr. Indu Sharma, Convener, ESM cell informed that students of B. Sc. Agriculture semster I, B. Sc. Medical semester III, M. Sc. Botany sem III and M. Sc. Ag. (Horticulture) Vegetable Science semester III have done plantation of Sandalwood, Bahera, Arjuna and Neem during the plantation drive. All saplings were planted in the medicinal section of Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji Memorial Botanical Garden with the help of Mr. Jeeta. On the occasion, Ms. Harjit Kaur and Ms. Rajwinder Kaur from UICAIS adopted these saplings.
