One Day International Seminar on World Water Day 2023

Under the aegis of IQAC and IIC, the department of Life Sciences, Allied Health Sciences and Agriculture Sciences in association with Environment Sustainability and Management Cell (ESM Cell) of SBBSU organized One Day International Seminar on 27th March 2023 in lieu of celebration of World Water Day 2023.
World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March every year and reminds us the importance of water and the urgent need for conservation efforts to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. This year the theme of the day was “Accelerating the change” to tackle the water and sanitation crisis facing by world especially in developing countries.
The seminar was commenced with the welcome speech by Dr Chetna Sharma followed by customary lamp lighting by worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr) Dharmjit Singh Parmar, Respected Dr Vijay Dhir (Registrar, SBBSU) and Dr Shweta Singh (Dean UIS). Dr Jagdeep kaur (Dy. Dean UIET) and Dr Nisha Sharma (Dy. Dean UIS) were among the other dignitaries present on the occasion.
The introductory speech about the seminar was given by Dr Aksh Sharma (Coordinator, ESM Cell). She also introduced the audience with the guest speakers of the day.
The seminar was conducted in hybrid mode. Morning session was conducted in the virtual mode during which two of the resource persons delivered their presentation through online.
The first guest speaker of the day, Dr Aditya Gupta, Post Doc Research Fellow from Animal parasitic diseases Laboratory, Maryland USA delivered valuable and informative talk on water borne diseases of protozoan parasites. In his talk, he discussed about their mode of transmission, prevention and improved water sanitation and hygiene as effective control measures of the protozoan diseases.
Our second Expert was Dr Archana Chaudhary, Associate Professor, Environmental Sciences from SGT University, Gurugram (Haryana). She enlightened the audience with her talk on Biodiversity Restoration & Sustainability. She highlighted the need of biodiversity restoration as effective measure to tackle the global issues like food, water insecurities, climate change and pollution etc.
In the post lunch session, third guest speaker of the Dr Shivya Thakur, MD Microbiologist from Shrimann Superspeciality Hospital, Jalandhar gave her presentation on Biological Contamination of water and its Impact on Human Health.
She told the students that drinking of water contaminated with microbial pathogens such as bacteria, virus, protozoan etc. has the devastating effects on human health. The diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio, schistosomiasis and hepatitis etc. are mainly caused due to consumption of poor quality water contaminated with the presence of these pathogenic microbes which eventually enter the water supply through animal activity, agricultural run off and sewage leaks.
Overall, the seminar was very informative. All the speakers shared their knowledge by giving real life examples and videos.
The seminar was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Shweta Singh, Dean UIS. Over all the talk was very much informative.
