To address a growing need to make researchers in Allied Health Sciences comfortable with the tools of molecular biology, the department of Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences organized one day Workshop on “Genomic DNA Extraction” on 14th November 2022. The Resource person for the event was Dr. Ranjana Cheema, Professor from the department of Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences, SBBSU.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Shweta Singh, HOD, Life Sciences with brief introduction about the workshop highlighting the significant and diversified role of molecular biological techniques in modern research era. The major objective of the workshop was to provide hands on practice on basic Molecular Biology Technique: Genomic DNA Extraction used for medical as well as research fields. Faculty members of Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences department along with five research scholars and PG students attended the workshop (Annexure -I).
In the first half, expert gave an introductory presentation on the basics of molecular techniques of genomic DNA extraction from plant, bacteria and human blood cells. At the end of presentation, there was a discussion session during which various queries regarding reagent/buffer preparation and practical aspects were solved.
All participants were provided with the course material including standardized protocol for the genomic DNA extraction which was followed by hands on practice by the participants in groups. During second half, all participants performed plant DNA extraction by CTAB and ethanol precipitation method.
The outcome of the workshop was more positive interaction among all the attendants and their participation gave idea to all about handling, performing and interpretation of work.
The workshop was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Aksh Sharma, COD, Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences. She also appreciated and motivated the participants for their enthusiastic approach throughout the session.
