World Heart Day (2022)

Every year, 29th September is observed as World Heart Day to raise awareness among public to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
As per the data available with the World Heart Federation, Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of deaths among non-communicable diseases. It has also been reported that the mortality due to heart problems, mostly due to heart attacks, have been doubled in the last three decades.
Experts (Cardiologists) have said that the mortality due to heart attacks can be prevented simply by educating the youth and general public about the high risks factors contributing to the development of cardiovascular/heart problems.
With the same objective, under the aegis of IQAC, the Department of Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences organized an expert lecture on “Cardiovascular Diseases: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment” in room no. 120, Ground floor, Block 5, SBBSU.
About 55 students were present among the audience along with 15 faculty members.
The resource person, Dr Komalpreet, a Physiotherapist from the department of physiotherapy of SBBSU gave vital information about the causes and preventions of heart problems.
During this session, information about recent advancements in heart treatment and ways by which one can strengthen the heart was also disseminated.
She also gave demonstrations about the techniques of cardio-excercises and highlighted the importance of the same to improve the heart health.
Various other activities were also conducted on this occasion and the students from other disciplines of Life Sciences; including B.Sc Medical Lab Sciences, M.Sc. Medical Microbiology and Bachelor in Physiotherapy participated in the event and spread awareness by giving short presentations on the cardiovascular diseases, causes and ways to prevent them.
They also educated the staff and students from other institutes about disease risks through charts and posters.
In their presentations, the students highlighted the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, smoking, junk food and obesity as major risk factors leading to heart diseases. They also emphasised that by quitting these habits and following regular exercise and healthy life style one can reduce the risk of developing heart problems and stroke.
The whole event was conducted and managed by the faculty members of Medical lab sciences discipline under the leadership of HOD, Dr Shweta Singh. Overall the event was very fruitful.
The winners and participants of various activities conducted during the event were awarded with certificates.
