Educational Visit to Guru Nanak Sadh Sangat Charitable Hospital, Kalra

In order to impart practical exposure to functioning of clinical laboratories, the Department of Life Sciences & Allied Health Sciences organized an educational visit to Guru Nanak Sadh Sangat Cheritable Hospital, Kalra on 15 September, 2022 for the students of B.Sc MLS (Sem III, Batch 2020) and MSc Medical Microbiology (Sem – I, Batch 2022). The visit was headed by three faculty members “Dr Shweta Singh (HOD, Life Sciences), Dr Chetna Sharma (AP, MLS/Biochemistry) and Ms Sonia (AP, MLS/Microbiology)” of Medical Lab Sciences (Allied Health Sciences) division of Life Science department. The group of 53 members including students and faculty departed from university at 10:00 AM and reached the hospital at 10:30 AM.
In the hospital, the students were first received at the reception area by the hospital supervisor; Mr Yadvinder Singh. There, the students were divided into three batches of 17 each to facilitate the laboratory visits to three key laboratory areas: Hematology, Clinical Biochemistry and Microbiology.
In Clinical Biochemistry section, the students were introduced about operation and applications of various instruments related to clinical biochemistry such as pH meter, flame photometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Electrophoresis unit. Students also gained knowledge to work on some latest and more advanced automated models of Clinical Biochemistry Analyzers and ELISA Readers. They also learned about the various considerations that should be taken within laboratories while performing the tests. They were also informed about the result reporting and importance of critical values by the experts.
Then the students moved to Microbiology Lab where the instructor enriched their knowledge about the various types of culture media and their applications. The instructor also demonstrated about preparation of the culture media (Blood agar media) & procedure for disinfection and sterilization of the lab-wares like Petri dishes and other lab wares. The students also gained information regarding handling of bio-safety tools and waste disposal.
In the last, the students were taken to Hematology section where the various tests on blood samples are performed mainly for the diagnosis and management of disorders of blood cells, white corpuscles, platelets and the coagulation systems. There students were enlightened with the knowledge of various methods of blood sample collection and their preservation, functioning of automated blood cell counters and analyzers.
At last, the Medical Officer, Dr. Gurbase Kaur personally meets the students and appreciated their passion towards the learning.
Overall the visit was very inspiring and enriched the knowledge of students about significant role of laboratories in generating the results essential for diagnosis and patient management. They gained knowledge about advanced instrumentation and functioning of various clinical laboratories in the Institution/Hospital premises.
