Activity Report
With the blessings of Chancellor Baba Manmohan Singh Ji and under the leadership of Vice
Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Dhir and S. Hardaman Singh Minhas, Secretary, Sant Baba Bhag
Singh Charitable Memorial Society, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University (SBBSU) organised a
full-day awareness programme on the occasion of World Water Day at Ghurial village,
Jalandhar district on Monday. The event was conducted under the aegis of IQAC and the
Institution’s Innovation Cell, in collaboration with the Farm Advisory Office of Punjab
Agricultural University (PAU), Jalandhar, and Prithvi Welfare Society.
The initiative aimed to educate farmers and promote the adoption of sustainable practices in
line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programme witnessed enthusiastic
participation from local farmers, village residents, faculty members, and around 40 students
from the Faculty of Agriculture, SBBSU.
The focus of the programme was to address critical issues such as groundwater depletion and
to encourage the use of efficient water management practices in agriculture.
The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Head, Faculty of
Agriculture, SBBSU. This was followed by a keynote lecture by Dr. Maninder Singh,
Principal Extension Specialist (Agronomy), PAU, Farm Advisory Office, who highlighted the
urgent need for judicious use of water in agriculture. He advocated the adoption of modern
irrigation techniques such as drip and sprinkler systems, use of tensiometers, rainwater
harvesting, crop diversification, and scientific resource management for ensuring long-term
sustainability.
Subsequently, Dr. Kulbir Singh, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, SBBSU, emphasised the
importance of drip irrigation, kitchen gardening, reducing water wastage, and the responsible
utilisation of available water resources.
Harinder Singh, President of Prithvi Welfare Society, urged farmers to collectively take
responsibility for water conservation. He stressed that increased awareness and behavioural
changes are essential to effectively tackle the ongoing water crisis and secure water for future
generations.
Dr. Rajeev Sharma, former Head, Department of Botany and Agriculture, DAV College,
Hoshiarpur, and an active member of Prithvi Welfare Society, shared practical insights on
water conservation methods, including well construction, rainwater harvesting, and sprinkler
irrigation, along with other strategies to preserve water resources.
The programme was attended by Dr. Amrinder Singh Minhas (Dean, Alumni and Extension
Activities), Dr. Ajitpal Singh, Dr. Kanika, and Amarjit Singh, a committee member, Sant
Baba Bhag Singh Charitable Memorial Society.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Harjit Singh, Sarpanch of Ghurial
village, who expressed sincere gratitude to the university and collaborating organisations for
organising such an informative and impactful programme.
