Activity Report
An educational visit to Centre of Excellence for Citrus was organized on 23rd April, 2026 for the students of B.Sc. Agriculture 8th Semester under the Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) module “Commercial Horticulture.” The visit was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Shalu Vyas to provide practical knowledge regarding modern citrus production and commercial horticultural practices.
During the visit, students learned about the preparation of citrus rootstocks from seeds of JattiKhatti, which are commonly used for healthy and vigorous citrus plant production. Experts demonstrated nursery raising techniques, seed treatment, and maintenance of rootstock seedlings. Students also observed budding and grafting techniques used for the propagation of quality citrus plants and understood the importance of healthy mother plants in nursery production.
The experts explained various plant protection measures adopted in citrus orchards, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM), disease monitoring, use of sticky traps, and safe pesticide application methods. Students also visited different trial blocks where Indian and Israeli citrus varieties were maintained for evaluation and research purposes. Special attention was given to seedless Kinnow plants maintained in the mother block for future propagation and commercial cultivation.
The students further visited the cold storage facility at the centre, where farmers store citrus fruits for maintaining quality and extending shelf life after harvest. The importance of post-harvest management, grading, and storage in commercial horticulture was explained in detail.
The visit proved highly beneficial for the “Commercial Horticulture” module under ELP as students gained practical exposure to nursery management, propagation techniques, orchard management, post-harvest handling, and modern citrus production technologies. The visit helped students understand commercial aspects of horticulture and enhanced their practical and entrepreneurial skills.
Overall, the educational visit was informative and successfully completed under the supervision of Dr. Shalu Vyas.
