WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION
Introduction:
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8th March around the globe to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity. A debate competition was held on 7th march on the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, emphasizing the importance of economic empowerment and equality for women worldwide.
Event Overview:
The event commenced at 10:00 AM with a welcome speech by Dr. Pooja Bali, who highlighted the significance of the day and the contribution of women in all spheres of life. This was followed by a series of activities that celebrated and empowered women.
This significant event was organized with the heavenly blessings of Sant Baba Dilawar Singh Ji (Braham Ji), and under the constant motivation of Sant Baba ManMohan Singh Ji, Chancellor, SBBSU. The competition was held under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dharamjit Singh Parmar, the administrative support of Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Vikas, and the academic stewardship of Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Dhir, Dean Academics, who all played instrumental roles in shaping the success of this initiative.
The program was also conducted under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jalandhar, which enriched the event with its legal outreach and commitment to constitutional values. Their collaboration added further credibility and legal insight to the students’ artistic and intellectual efforts.
The event was coordinated under the able guidance of Dr. Pooja Bali, Dean, University Institute of Law, who served as the Convenor of the competition. Her unwavering dedication to promoting legal awareness and academic excellence was evident throughout the event.
The Co-Convenors, whose meticulous planning and execution ensured a seamless experience for all participants, included:
• Mr. Girija Nand Mr. Rishav Dogra Ms. Manjot Kaur Dr.. Manpreet Kaur
• Mr. Harinder Singh Ms. Amandeep Kaur Ms. Sapna Rani Ms. Navdeep Kaur
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality, especially in fields where women are still underrepresented—like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). While global awareness and initiatives to include more women in these fields have increased, the question remains: are we doing enough? Women continue to face challenges such as gender bias, lack of mentorship, and fewer leadership roles in STEM careers. Advocates argue that real empowerment must go beyond symbolic gestures and include tangible changes in education, workplace policies, and representation. This side of the debate highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to create an inclusive and equitable environment.
The entries were evaluated based on originality, relevance to the theme, visual appeal, and the depth of message conveyed. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, highlighting the students’ commitment to upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution.
The competition concluded with a reflective address from the dignitaries, appreciating the talent and social sensitivity exhibited by the participants. A heartfelt vote of thanks was extended to the management, organizing team, participating students, and the DLSA for their unwavering support in making the event a grand success.
The International Women’s Day celebration was a grand success. It provided a platform to acknowledge the achievements of women, raise awareness about gender equality, and inspire future generations. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a pledge to continue supporting women’s rights and empowerment.
