Activity Report
Under the blessings of Chancellor Baba Manmohan Singh Ji and the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Dhir and S. Hardaman Singh Minhas, Secretary of the Sant Baba Bhag Singh Charitable Memorial Society, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University (SBBSU) organized an extension educational visit to the PAU Vegetable Research Farm in Khanaura for students of the Faculty of Agriculture. Approximately 45 students took part in the visit, gaining practical, field-level exposure to scientific seed production in vegetable crops.
At the outset, Dr. Kulbir Singh, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at SBBSU, formally introduced the students to Dr.Sukhwinder Singh Aulakh, Incharge of the Vegetable Research Farm, emphasizing the value of experiential learning in agricultural education.
Dr. Aulakh then delivered an insightful lecture on the critical role of quality seed production in agriculture, explaining various scientific methods used for seed production in different vegetable crops. He covered essential practices such as isolation distance, rouging, varietal purity maintenance, pollination management, selection of healthy plants and post-harvest techniques including harvesting, grading and storage.
Following the lecture, students were taken to the research farm for practical demonstrations and field-based exposure to seed production techniques for onion, carrot, potato, tomato, ladyfinger, and cucurbit crops—both in open fields and greenhouses. The students observed various crop growth stages, seed production plots and field management practices under real farm conditions, which helped them, understand the practical application of the concepts discussed earlier.
The extension activity proved highly informative and beneficial, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on learning. Students actively participated throughout the visit and interacted with the expert to clarify their doubts regarding commercial seed production and crop management. Overall, the visit provided an enriching learning experience and significantly enhanced the students’ practical knowledge and technical understanding of vegetable seed production.
The event was successfully coordinated by Dr. Kanika Pandey, Dr. Robin and Ms. Neha Parmar. At the conclusion of the visit, students expressed sincere gratitude to the university authorities, faculty members and the resource person for organizing such a valuable and informative extension activity.
