Report on Initial and Final Setting Time of Cement under “Fix-it” day
Date:27 March 2025
Activity Report
Setting Time of Cement - Test Report
1. Introduction
The setting time of cement is a critical property that determines the usability of cement in construction.
It is divided into two stages: the initial setting time (when the cement starts to harden)
and the final setting time (when it completely loses its plasticity).
2. Objective
To determine the initial and final setting times of cement using the Vicat apparatus, ensuring the cement
meets standard workability requirements.
3. Apparatus and Materials
- Vicat apparatus with needles
- Cement sample
- Measuring cylinder
- Standard consistency test equipment
- Stopwatch
- Weighing balance
- Water
4. Procedure
- Prepare a cement paste of standard consistency.
- Fill the Vicat mould with the paste and level the surface.
-
For initial setting time, insert the Vicat needle (1 mm diameter) into the paste at regular intervals.
Record the time when the needle fails to penetrate 5 mm from the bottom of the mould.
-
For final setting time, replace the needle with a circular attachment.
Record the time when the needle fails to leave any visible impression on the surface.
- Note the time elapsed from adding water to each stage.
5. Results
Example (for Ordinary Portland Cement):
- Initial Setting Time: 45 minutes
- Final Setting Time: 240 minutes
6. Conclusion
The tested cement meets standard setting time requirements
(initial setting time > 30 minutes and
final setting time < 600 minutes as per IS: 4031).
This indicates it is suitable for general construction purposes.
