Debate Competition 2025

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering organized a Debate Competition on 24th July 2025 as part of the ongoing induction activities for first-year students. The event was organized by Er. Hitakshi, Departmental Activity Incharge, under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Jagdeep Kaur, Dean UIET and Head, Department of CSE.

The competition aimed to enhance students’ public-speaking, analytical, and critical-thinking skills while providing them with a platform to articulate their views on a socially and technologically significant topic.

Theme of the Event

The theme for the debate was “Technology: Boon or Bane”, a topic that sparked thoughtful discussion among participants. Students explored how technology has transformed human lives while also debating its potential drawbacks such as over-dependence, privacy issues, and ethical concerns.

The event encouraged participants to present balanced viewpoints on how technology can serve as both a powerful tool for progress and, if misused, a source of societal challenges.

Participation and Engagement

A total of 38 students from the first year of B.Tech CSE and B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) participated with enthusiasm. Participants were divided into two teams — one speaking for the motion and the other against it.

Speakers in favor of technology highlighted its role in innovation, healthcare, education, automation, and global communication, showcasing its power to empower industries and individuals. Those against the motion discussed issues such as cybercrime, mental health impacts, job loss due to automation, and decline in human interaction.

The debate was filled with research-based arguments, clarity of thought, and confident delivery, making it both engaging and intellectually stimulating.

Judges and Guests

The competition was judged by Er. Neelam and Er. Harmeet Kaur, who evaluated participants based on content quality, logical flow, confidence, voice modulation, and presentation skills.

The judges appreciated the participants’ enthusiasm, depth of understanding, and confidence. They offered constructive feedback and encouraged students to take part in more such academic and co-curricular activities that foster communication and leadership qualities.

Event Coordination

The event was efficiently coordinated by Er. Hitakshi, Departmental Activity Incharge. All arrangements — from registration and logistics to time management — were handled with precision. The Computer Lab, Block No. 5, served as the venue, providing a professional and interactive setup for the debate.

Faculty members and student volunteers ensured smooth execution, and the active participation of the audience further enhanced the energy and success of the event.

Conclusion

The Debate Competition proved to be an enriching experience, giving students a platform to build their communication, reasoning, and persuasive skills while developing confidence in public speaking.

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Jagdeep Kaur, Dean UIET and Head, Department of CSE, the event successfully promoted intellectual engagement, teamwork, and healthy competition among students. The session concluded with appreciation remarks from the judges and faculty, who commended the participants’ performances and encouraged them to continue participating in such meaningful and skill-building activities.
