Report:
Sant Baba Bhag Singh University (SBBSU), Jalandhar, successfully conducted a three-day hands-on training workshop on “Scientific Research Writing Using LaTeX”, jointly organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), the Office of Student Welfare, and the Department of Physical Sciences. The workshop was scheduled from 13th to 15th October 2026, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Computer Laboratory, Block 5. However, due to technical reasons, the third-day session was rescheduled and successfully completed on 22nd October 2026.
The workshop witnessed the participation of approximately 35–40 postgraduate students, Ph.D. research scholars, and faculty members from various departments. It aimed to enhance participants’ proficiency in scientific writing, academic typesetting, research documentation, and the preparation of professional research manuscripts and presentations using LaTeX.
Dr. Satnam Singh, Department of Physical Sciences, SBBSU, served as the resource person and delivered comprehensive, hands-on training through practical demonstrations and guided exercises. The workshop was structured into three thematic sessions to facilitate progressive learning, from the fundamentals of LaTeX to scientific document preparation and advanced applications.
The first-day session, held on 13th October 2026, focused on the fundamentals of LaTeX. Participants were introduced to the LaTeX environment and the creation of new documents. The session covered document structure, including sections, subsections and subsubsections; text formatting; comments; text size and spacing; numbered and bulleted lists; mathematical mode; equations, symbols and vectors; equation labelling; and cross-referencing. Participants also practised preparing a basic scientific document.
The second-day session, held on 14th October 2026, focused on scientific document preparation. Participants received practical training in creating two-column documents, inserting footnotes, managing bibliographies and citations, and formatting references. The session also covered adding and positioning figures, creating and formatting tables, generating indexes, and using cross-referencing tools. Through guided exercises, participants worked on scientific documents integrating equations, figures, tables, and references.
The third-day session, completed on 22nd October 2026, focused on advanced applications and templates in LaTeX. Participants explored QR code generation, formatting chemical reactions, incorporating computer programs and code into LaTeX documents, integrating equations from online sources, and creating watermarks. The session further introduced ready-to-use LaTeX templates and their applications in preparing assignments, applications, and SBBSU question papers. A final hands-on exercise and troubleshooting session enabled participants to consolidate their learning, followed by an interactive question-and-answer discussion.
Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged in the practical exercises and gained exposure to the effective use of LaTeX for preparing structured, technically accurate, and professionally formatted academic documents. The training was particularly beneficial for research scholars and faculty members involved in preparing research papers, dissertations, project reports, mathematical documents, and academic presentations.
During the concluding session, the organizers and participants expressed their appreciation to Dr. Satnam Singh for his valuable guidance, practical demonstrations, and interactive teaching approach. Certificates of completion were awarded to the participants.
The workshop concluded successfully, achieving its objective of strengthening research writing and technical documentation skills. The initiative reflected SBBSU’s commitment to promoting research capacity building, digital proficiency, academic excellence, and innovation through collaborative academic activities organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council, the Office of Student Welfare, and the Department of Physical Sciences.
