The Department of Life Sciences, University Institute of Sciences (UIS), Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and under the aegis of IQAC, SBBSU, organized an Expert Talk on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” on 04 May 2026 in online mode. The session was delivered by Dr. Arvind K. Shakya, Associate Professor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
The expert provided an insightful overview of the concept, significance, and various forms of Intellectual Property Rights, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications. Relevant examples were discussed to enhance participants’ understanding of the scope and practical application of different forms of intellectual property.
The session further addressed the process and procedures for obtaining IPR protection, including patent filing, copyright registration, and trademark registration, with emphasis on documentation, legal procedures, and the role of relevant national and international organizations. The importance of originality, proper citation, plagiarism prevention, copyright compliance, and responsible use of intellectual assets in academic and professional work was also highlighted.
A significant component of the session focused on the role of IPR in research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization. Participants were encouraged to recognize the intellectual property potential of their research and innovative ideas and to understand how appropriate IPR protection can support the development and dissemination of creative and research outcomes.
The programme was attended by 192 participants, comprising 96 students from SBBSU, 40 faculty members, and 56 external participants. The session provided a valuable platform for enhancing awareness of intellectual property and fostering a culture of innovation, originality, ethical research, and responsible protection of intellectual assets.
The programme concluded with an interactive exchange of queries and discussions, making the session informative and relevant to the academic and research community.
