The Department of History and the Department of Political Science, University Institute of Humanities, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Khiala, Jalandhar, observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on 14 August 2026 at the Language Lab, Block 3. The programme was organised to remember the suffering, displacement, loss of lives and immense human tragedy associated with the Partition of India in 1947. The programme provided an opportunity for students to reflect upon one of the most painful episodes in the history of the Indian subcontinent. The observance highlighted the importance of remembering the experiences of those who were affected by Partition and of promoting peace, communal harmony, mutual respect and understanding among different communities. During the programme, Dr. Sameer, Dr. Riyaz, and Dr. Hardev Kaur addressed the students. Through their addresses, they discussed various historical and human dimensions of partition and emphasised the need to learn from the past. They encouraged the students to approach the history of partition with sensitivity and objectivity and to recognise the human cost of violence, communal division, forced migration and displacement. The speakers also stressed that remembrance should not merely focus on the tragedy of the past but should inspire present and future generations to work towards social harmony, tolerance, coexistence and peace. The students listened attentively to the addresses and engaged with the theme of the programme with seriousness and reflection. The observance successfully created awareness among students about the historical significance of partition and its enduring impact on society. It served as a meaningful academic and commemorative initiative by the Departments of History and Political Science, reinforcing the importance of historical memory and the values of peace and communal harmony. The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to remember the victims and survivors of partition and to promote a society based on understanding, compassion and peaceful coexistence.
