Event Report

A two-day Farmer’s Training Programme was organized by the Department of Agriculture, University Institute of Agriculture, on the theme “Skill Development Training on Beekeeping and Honey Production” (ਮਧੂ ਮੱਖੀ ਪਾਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਦ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੁਨਰ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਿਕਸ਼ਣ). The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shalu Vyas, Additional Dean, University Institute of Agriculture. The primary objective of the training was to provide scientific and practical knowledge of beekeeping to farmers in order to enhance their income generation, improve pollination efficiency, and promote sustainable livelihoods.

The training programme included interactive lectures and hands-on demonstrations on various aspects of beekeeping such as apiary management, honey extraction, and value addition. A total of 11 farmers from nearby villages, possessing small landholdings, participated enthusiastically in the programme.

Dr. Ombir, Professor of Entomology at the Department of Agriculture, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, served as the resource expert for the training. He provided detailed explanations about different species of honey bees, their hive structures, behavior, interaction, and safe handling techniques. He also demonstrated the processes involved in honey extraction and processing, along with practical guidance on bee management practices such as feeding, disease management, and colony maintenance.

During the session, Dr. Ombir also shared examples of progressive beekeepers and discussed the potential income generation from beekeeping. He explained how farmers can establish a small-scale apiary in limited space and manage it effectively. The participating farmers actively interacted with the expert and raised several questions related to challenges faced in apiary management and honey production.

Dr. Vikrant Jaryan also shared his experience regarding the management and honey production practices followed in the university apiary, providing valuable insights to the participating farmers.
