World Mosquito Day is observed every year on 20th August to commemorate the historic discovery made by Sir Ronald Ross, who proved that the female Anopheles mosquito is responsible for transmitting malaria.
This breakthrough laid the foundation for controlling mosquito-borne diseases and continues to inspire global health initiatives.
The theme for World Mosquito Day 2025 is “Accelerating the Fight Against Malaria for a More Equitable World.” This year’s focus emphasizes the urgent need to strengthen efforts in malaria prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research while ensuring that these resources are accessible to all, particularly vulnerable and underserved communities.
Despite scientific progress, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus remain major public health threats worldwide, causing millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, with children under five being the most affected group.
As a part of the observance, the Department of Life Sciences and Allied Health Sciences conducted an awareness drive to educate school children about mosquito-borne diseases and their prevention. The event was conducted under the aegis of IQAC.
A group of 38 students of M.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology (3rd semester), M.Sc. MMB (3rd semester), M.Sc. Clinical Biochemistry (3rd semester) and B.Sc MLS (5th Sem) under the guidance of two faculty members, Dr. Talib Hussain Dar and Ms. Pooja, participated in this awareness drive.
The PG students educated the school students of classes 11th and 12th std. of the Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Ahirana Kalan, about the role of mosquitoes in spreading vector-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and zika virus.
Children were also guided on preventive measures at both personal and community levels, including the use of mosquito nets, repellents, protective clothing, and timely medical consultation. The information was disseminated through PowerPoint presentations, charts, and posters.
The importance of environmental cleanliness and the elimination of stagnant water, the common mosquito breeding grounds, was also emphasized.
The students were also encouraged to become active participants in promoting healthier surroundings.
The teaching staff members of the school also cooperated and helped us in the conduct of this event, and appreciated the efforts the students had put into making this event successful.
Overall, the event was concluded with a shared commitment to spread awareness and take collective responsibility for a healthier and safer tomorrow.
