An extension activity on Crop Residue Management and Tree Plantation was successfully organized under the Viksit Bharat KrishiSankalpAbhiyan on 15 October, 2025 by Dr.Shalu Vyas, Department of Agriculture, University Institute of Agriculture (UIA), Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Jalandhar. The programme was conducted in nearby villages with the objective of spreading awareness among farmers about the adverse effects of stubble burning and the sustainable management of crop residues to improve soil fertility and environmental health.
During the rally, students and faculty members interacted with farmers and local residents, highlighting the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices such as in-situ residue management, use of bio-decomposers, and conservation agriculture technologies. The faculty in the leadership of Dr. Vikrant Jaryan, HoD Agriculture, and Dr Kulbir Singh, Professor accompanied by Dr. Vijay Singh, Dr.Ajitpal Singh, Dr. Praveen Singh, Dr, Ram Prakash and Mr Rajesh conducted the rally. The 35 students took part in the rally. The awareness campaign emphasized that burning paddy straw not only contributes to severe air pollution but also leads to the loss of valuable soil nutrients and destruction of beneficial microorganisms. Farmers were motivated to adopt residue incorporation techniques and to utilize agricultural machinery like Happy Seeder, Super-SMS, and Rotavator for effective residue management.
As part of the event, a tree plantation drive was also organized to promote environmental sustainability and increase green cover in the villages. Various fruit-bearing and shade-providing saplings were planted by faculty members, students, and farmers. The plantation activity symbolized the commitment of the Department of Agriculture towards climate-resilient and eco-friendly agricultural practices.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers and students, who expressed their appreciation for the university’s efforts in organizing such awareness programmes under the national campaign. The event concluded with a collective pledge to work towards cleaner air, healthier soils, and a greener rural environment.
