Objectives:
- Raising awareness
- Teaching about human impact
- Promoting sustainable practices
- Preparing for climate change
Highlights:
- The Electrical Engineering Department, UIET, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University (SBBSU), Jalandhar organized an extension activity on the topic “Solutions to Global Warming” at Village: Sandhra, Distt.: Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India, on 18th October, 2024.
- A total of 5 students and 2 faculty/staff members organized the extension activity.
- Global Warming is the current increase in Surface temperature of the Earth's (both land and water) as well as its atmosphere. Average temperatures around the world have risen by 0.75°C (1.4°F) over the last two thirds of this increase, occurring since 1975.
- In the past, when the earth experienced increases in temperature, it was the result of natural causes, but today it is being caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere produced by human activities.
- The natural greenhouse effect maintains the earth temperature at a safe level, making it possible for humans and many other life forms to exist. However, since the industrial revolution, human activities have significantly enhanced the greenhouse effect causing the earth's average temperature to rise by almost 1°C. This is creating the global warming we see today.
- It is nearly impossible to overstate the threat of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions are rising more rapidly than predicted, and consequently, the world is warming more quickly.
- Global warming will have catastrophic effects such as accelerating sea level rise, droughts, floods, storms, and heat waves. These will impact some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people, disrupting food production and threatening vitally important species, habitats, and ecosystems.
- Global warming is affecting many places around the world. It is accelerating the melting of ice sheets, permafrost, and glaciers, which is causing average sea levels to rise. It is also changing precipitation and weather patterns in many different places.
- These changes have affected both nature and human society and will continue to have increasingly worse effects if greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow at the same pace as today.
- Global warming is making arid and semi-arid areas even more dry than before, causing water shortages and distress to millions of people in these regions, which are degrading into deserts.
Effects of Global Warming:
- Desertification
- Increased melting of snow and ice
- Sea level rise
- Stronger hurricanes and cyclones
Conclusion:
Hence the solution to these problems is that students have to plant trees, make use of natural light and air, and avoid using electricity, especially gadgets like air conditioners and refrigerators, as they pollute the environment. Further, the future generation can be saved only if we plant trees, allowing people to live peaceful and healthy lives. Let’s all take an oath to plant trees and save our MOTHER EARTH….
