INTRODUCTION

Sant Baba Bhag Singh University celebrated International Mother Language Day 2026 with great enthusiasm and cultural spirit on 23 February 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Seminar Hall. The event was organized by the Youth Welfare Department in collaboration with the Department of Student Welfare under the aegis of IQAC, SBBSU. The celebration aimed to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity and promote respect for mother languages among students.

INAUGURAL SESSION

The program was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. Vijay Dhir, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized that mother languages represent our culture, identity, and heritage. He encouraged students to take pride in their native languages and actively contribute to their preservation and development in an increasingly globalized world.

The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Gurmanik Kaur and Dr. Vikrant. Ms. Shaina Parmar played a significant role in organizing and coordinating the celebration smoothly and effectively.

OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT

  • To create awareness about the importance of mother languages in preserving cultural identity and heritage.
  • To promote linguistic diversity and inclusivity.
  • To encourage students to respect and actively use their mother tongues.
  • To strengthen cultural values among the youth.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

The academic session featured insightful lectures delivered in different languages, reflecting the true spirit of multilingualism.

Dr. Samriti Thakur delivered a lecture in English, highlighting the global importance of multilingualism and the role of language skills in enhancing communication and career opportunities.

Ms. Paramjit Kaur addressed the audience in Hindi, emphasizing the emotional and cultural bond individuals share with their mother tongue.

In Punjabi, Retired Principal and National Awardee Ms. Simrat Smera delivered an inspiring lecture on the richness, heritage, and enduring legacy of the Punjabi language. Her address deeply resonated with the audience and reinforced the need to preserve regional languages.

The celebration also included cultural performances. Students Japneet, Jasleen, Hardeep, Kajal, and Gaurav presented meaningful poem recitations dedicated to mother languages. Their performances reflected linguistic pride and cultural appreciation.

PARTICIPATION AND ENGAGEMENT

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 120 students belonging to various departments. The audience actively engaged with the speakers and appreciated the cultural performances. Faculty members and staff were also present, demonstrating collective support for linguistic diversity and cultural preservation.

EVENT OUTCOMES

The celebration successfully enhanced awareness among students regarding the importance of mother languages. It strengthened respect for linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. The event motivated students to preserve and promote their mother tongues in daily life and reinforced the University’s commitment to cultural values and inclusivity.

VOTE OF THANKS

The program concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Shaina Parmar, Deputy Director Youth Welfare. She expressed sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, esteemed speakers, faculty members, participants, and the organizing team for making the event a grand success. She encouraged students to continue valuing and preserving their mother languages for future generations.
