a) Solid waste management
  • The solid waste management deals with the installation of dust bins and their daily cleaning. The University has its own collection facility that collects the solid wastes daily from Canteen, Hostel mess and Departments. This helps in maintaining the cleanliness by providing an efficient, safe and regulated management of solid waste in the campus.
  • University have issued separate circulars for segregation of waste in different categories and dispose biodegradable waste in pits dug outside the university in SBBSMCS land. The plastic, paper, glass and metal waste are collected, stored and sold to the vendors. Some metal waste is used again to repair and build new equipment’s in the workshop.
  • The colour coded bins for different wastes are placed at different locations in the university campus for collection of waste and its easy sorting at source. For dry waste, blue coloured dust bins are placed in the canteens and wet waste is disposed of into green dust bins. Blue dustbins are meant for disposal of plastic wrappers and non-biodegradable waste. Yellow dustbins are meant for papers and glass bottles. Items like aluminium foils, tetra packs, glass, paper, plastics, metals, etc. under the dry waste category, whereas kitchen waste such as stale food, fruits and vegetables come under wet waste.
  • Separate incinerators are installed in women’s washroom in alternate floors in each building for disposing off the used sanitary pads.
  • The institution has taken steps to minimise and avoid paper usage. Printouts and photocopies are taken on both sides of the pages to avoid excess paper usage.
  • Faculty and administration staff uses old papers and envelops for internal usages as rough work, file markers, page separators etc. One side printed paper is used as notices which are displayed on the notice boards. The paper waste after using both sides is sold to paper recyclers.
b) Liquid Waste Management
  • The liquid waste generated in the campus include Sewage, Laundry, Hostel and Canteen effluent waste. The above waste is treated through Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with 600 KLD setup in the institute. The treated water is used for watering the plantation.
  • The sludge settled in the STP is removed and is dried given to outside agencies for disposal.
c) Biomedical Waste Management
  • University has different types of laboratories like Medical Laboratory, Science labs, Agriculture labs, and Physiotherapy & Chemistry labs. These labs generate waste such as cotton plugs, swabs, tissue paper, glassware, bottles, needles etc. Biomedical waste generates from the laboratory dispose off at Kalra Hospital as the Hospital link up with Rainbow Company, Chandigarh.
c) Biomedical Waste Management
  • University has its own e-waste committee. All E-waste is collected and stored in respected department and once in a year this e-waste is given to authorized vendor from Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) for recycling.
